Dinner at Viennese Heuriger ”10er Marie

Monday, 2 Oct 2017, 18.30 – 23.00

The Monday evening programme will provide a tour on a Vintage Tram which will get participants to know Vienna from a very special view. The unique flair of the old imperial city Vienna can be experienced in a historical and stylish way.

The tour will start close to the hotels (several stops for individual get-on, information about timetable and location of stops will be provided with conference documents upon registration) and take you on a comfortable, leisurely ride through Vienna with great views all the way around the famous Ringstrasse with the most important historic buildings and along the Kai, before heading to the famous district Josefstadt and finally to the traditional Heurigen “10er Marie” in the suburb of Ottakring. A guide will tell you all about the city and its history during the tram ride.

The real Viennese “Heurige” or wine taverns have been praised in many songs and have served as a backdrop for many well-known films. However, in the legendary comfortable atmosphere, they primarily offer the Viennese citizen and their guests entertainment, fine Viennese wines and the home-made delicacies. A place in which to feel good, in which everyone is warmly welcome. The real Viennese “Heurige”, in which only Viennese wines are served, are identified by a bunch of pine branches, illuminated and hanging over the front door of the tavern. The word “Ausg’steckt” written on a board, indicates that the tavern is open.

Vienna is the only metropolis that grows enough wine within its municipial borders to make it worth mentioning. White and red wines are grown on the 700 hectares of Viennese vineyards. We will get a taste of the Wiener Gemischter Satz being a specialty and live music with songs full of Viennese spirit.

”Vienna and its culture”

Monday, 2 Oct 2017, 13.00 – 16.30, Meeting Point BEV, Schiffamtsgasse 1-3, 1020 Wien, Lobby ground floor (walking tour around 1 km)

The guided tour will start from BEV and a short trip on public transport will bring the group to the very city centre of Vienna - to the National Opera House, an exciting remnant of the Austrian empire.

The “Wiener Staatsoper” is one of the leading opera houses in the world. Each season, the schedule features 350 performances of more than 60 different operas and ballets accompanied by a unique orchestra: the orchestra of Wiener Staatsoper, whose members at the same time make up the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

The architecture of the building goes back to the 19th century, with cultural heritage Inside and outside. The well-known main auditorium provides a perfect scenery once a year for the famous Opernball.

The Musikverein - a name that stands for a lot. World renowned for its acoustics in the Golden Hall, millions of spectators at the New Year's concert of the Vienna Philharmonic's, this house has many other exciting stories to tell.

It is not only music, but also history in this building!

The programme will include a guided-tour in one of the two buildings – looking behind the stage and getting an impression of what is happening in the underground, while spectators are watching performances and listening to music. Due to constraints from short-term arrangements for rehearsals, it will be decided on a short term which building will be visited.

After the visit to the cultural sites the group will enjoy a traditional Viennese coffee and cake in the famous “Demel”, a well known institution in Vienna and an ambassador of Austrian lifestyle since centuries. Enjoy the afternoon coffee and walk back along the most famous boulevard “Kohlmarkt” and “Graben” with its most exclusive shops and with a touch of Viennese atmosphere.

“Old Viennese crafts”

Tuesday, 3 Oct 2017, 9.30 – 14.00, Meeting Point BEV, Schiffamtsgasse 1-3, 1020 Wien, Lobby ground floor (walking tour around 1 km)

Vienna, as the former capital of the Austrian Empire, attracting citizen and visitors from all parts of the multi-cultural country at that time, was a centre of economy and science, of culture and of arts. A well developed scenery of small and medium enterprises, producing goods for all parts of the country and for the Imperial court set a sustainable scene of all kinds of crafts. The surrounding of the BEV was one of the part of the city where manufacturers established their companies. Some of them are still existing.

The tour will guide us to the small but world-wide known confiserie named “Altmann und Kühne”. The confectionary as produced in this old manufactury is “too beautiful as to be eaten” as it is said. The lilliput pieces are all made by hand. Which explains the considerable prices. Customers who buy the confectionary in the small art-nouveau shop located at "Graben" in the very city centre of Vienna have no idea of how it is produced – an extraordinary chance for our group to get this experience.

From this place a 20 minutes-walk will bring us to the famous Viennese porcelaine manufactury Augarten building on 300 years of tradition thus being the second oldest in Europe. Since its founding, each piece is manufactured and painted by hand. Viennese porcelain is famous for its delicate and graceful form, the purity of the lines and the exquisite quality. Highest quality and perfection are the Manufactory’s first priority. The tour will open the atelier where high-skilled painters decorate the fine porcelain pieces with modern and traditional design.

After the visits a lunch in one of the typical Viennese restaurants, called “Beisl” will be served. Afternoon is free at your own convenience.
